Teaching + Artist Assistantships

Teaching Assistant and Artist Assistant applicants use the same online form and are due by 11:59 PM [Pacific], February 1, 2020. New this year, the TA/AA application form is separate from the Student application.
In addition to gaining valuable studio experience, TAs and AAs receive housing, meals, a $50 store credit and travel reimbursement (60% for TAs; 100% for AAs; restrictions apply).
The primary role of a TA is to support teaching and community building activities within Pilchuck’s unique educational and artistic community.
Successful candidates would have an interest in teaching, great project planning and time management skills, be proactive, and enjoy problem solving. All assistants must have extensive studio experience and an interest in collaboration. Though not necessary, it is helpful for TAs to have previous experience at Pilchuck.
Each instructor is assisted by two or three TAs, depending on the studios being used and sometimes class size. TAs may know the instructor well, or not at all. In either case, the instructor should discuss what he/she expects to accomplish, and what he/she thinks students should know, experience, or discover, technically and artistically. It is important that TAs support the same goals as the instructor and the course as described in the course catalog.
TA responsibilities include:
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, studio coordinators, and instructors.
- Help instructors demonstrate various techniques pertaining to course content.
- Assist students in improving their skills and exploring ideas or processes.
- Encourage individual creative expression.
- Oversee safe and proper use and clean up of facilities.
- Participate in campus events.
- Attend scheduled meetings.
Instructors may assign special responsibilities for firing, investing, cleaning, distributing materials and supplies, annealing, charging, and so forth. It is important for TAs to work closely and in collaboration with the studio coordinators and staff, and other instructors and TAs sharing the facilities. After all class needs are met, there may be an opportunity for TAs to make their own work upon arrangement with the instructor.

The primary role of an AA is to support the creative efforts of the artist in residence and act as a technical resource while they explore many ways of working with glass. AAs also support Pilchuck’s unique educational and artistic community through whole-hearted participation in summer program activities and goals.
Successful candidates would have great project planning and time management skills, be proactive, and enjoy problem solving. All AAs must have extensive studio experience in various processes, interest in collaboration, and previous experience at Pilchuck.
It is important that AAs listen well, share their expertise, and work closely with studio coordinators in charge of facilities in order to schedule projects and work alongside the courses being taught. If the artist has no experience with glass, an AA helps them understand glass working in basic terms and embrace experimentation, answers questions, and also helps them understand what is realistic to achieve in the time available.
Depending on the artist and their projects, AAs may have responsibilities such as assisting the craftspersons in residence (gaffers) in the hot shop or possibly gaffing themselves, assisting in the print shop, wax working, mold making, coldworking, cleaning, distributing materials and supplies, annealing, and charging. AAs also advise the artist on sources for additional materials not supplied by Pilchuck or available in the store (Pilchuck supplies hot glass, scrap glass, a minimum of plaster and silica for kiln casting, some wax, as well as sand for hot casting).
AAs are obligated to work 40 hours a week for the artist, though this arrangement is flexible based on their needs. Packing and shipping are NOT the responsibility of an AA. There may be opportunity for AAs to make some of their own work during the session; time should be arranged in advance with the artist.
