Pilchuck specializes in the medium of glass so that all types of artist may explore
its potential in-depth. Our approach to education stems from founder Dale Chihuly’s
original concept of “artists teaching artists. ” We believe that people
everywhere thrive on creativity and that everyone can learn to cultivate their artistic
talents, at any stage of life and at any point in their development as an artist.
We aim to provide a learning experience that is unrivaled in its intensity, quality
of instruction and concentration of artistic talent.
Summer Sessions
Our summer course calendar consists of five consecutive sessions that run from May
through August. Within each session we offer five concurrent courses that are designed
for a range of skill levels and that draw upon all manner of techniques and methods
of working with glass as an artistic medium.
In addition to becoming a student there are
opportunities to participlate as summer
staff, teaching assistants,
or artists assistants while classes are
in session.
Each course accommodates up to 12 students and highlights a focused inquiry into
glassmaking techniques. The general curriculum covers glassblowing, hot-glass sculpting,
sand casting and kiln casting, fusing, pāte de verre, neon, stained glass,
painting with enamels, flameworking, mixed-media sculpture, and a range of coldworking
techniques. Courses vary from session to session and from summer to summer, but
all are designed to foster experimental and explorative learning.
Note: We offer two- and three-week sessions. For specifics about the length of
each session in 2010, please refer to the course calendar and note all dates carefully,
or contact the school directly for more information.
Instructors & Artists in Residence
The instructors who teach at Pilchuck are established artists working in glass as
well as other media, and are chosen for their artistic innovation and experience
within the medium. Artists in residence act as catalysts who invigorate and challenge
the content of each summer course at Pilchuck Glass School as they discover and
exploit the potential of glass. Accomplished in art forms outside of glass, artists
in residence are some of the most respected national and international artists working
today.
