Pilchuck Glass School 27th Annual Auction Raises Record Funds for School
|
Seattle, WA – October 28, 2005 – Pilchuck Glass School raised a record $1.3 million during its 27th annual gala black-tie auction held on October 21, 2005.
Through a combination of auction proceeds, ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations Pilchuck raised over $1.3 million. 900 attendees, including 260 contributing artists from around the globe, filled The Westin Seattle’s ballroom to bid on over 350 pieces of art created by American and international masters and emerging artists. Luminaries of the studio glass movement, including Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, and Flora Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick, joined patrons of the arts such as Jack and Becky Benaroya, Sam and Gladys Rubinstein, Chap and Eve Alvord, Jeff and Susan Brotman, and Jon and Mary Shirley, to raise funds for Pilchuck’s educational programs to support the next generation of artists.
The auction featured five silent auction sections and one live auction containing art created by artists affiliated with the school who hail from around the globe. Auction attendees also bid on over 100 centerpieces designed by Swedish artist and Kosta Boda designer Ann Wåhlström and created by a group of volunteers at Pilchuck’s campus during the spring.
One of Seattle’s renowned glass artists Benjamin Moore introduced the evening’s Fund-a-Need segment, dubbed Fund-the-Fire, providing auction attendees an opportunity to directly donate support for the school’s 2006 propane purchases. Moore reminded the audience that fuel is essential to every aspect of the school as propane fires the furnaces, torches, reheating ovens, as well as the stoves and ovens in the campus kitchen. Auction attendees responded by donating $133,600 to Fund-the-Fire, exceeding the school’s $100,000 goal. Donors guaranteed receipt of an additional $50,000 in challenge moneys from the Klorfine Foundation earmarked for campus building roof replacement.
“Artists, philanthropists, and collectors have united in an unparalleled show of support for Pilchuck,” observed Pilchuck Glass School Director of Development Katherine Cardinal. “It was a fabulous evening of people coming together to recognize Pilchuck’s place at the forefront of the studio glass movement – now and for many years to come.”
Executive Director Patricia Watkinson echoed Cardinal’s observations, adding “As with so many things at Pilchuck, it begins and ends with the artists. Contributing artists generously select some of their finest works to donate to the auction. Arts philanthropists and collectors attend the auction and purchase these extraordinary works. And all of this is undertaken to benefit the future generations of artists who work and create at Pilchuck Glass School.”
Pilchuck Glass School’s 28th annual auction will take place on Friday, October 13, 2006, at The Westin Seattle.
