Pilchuck proudly presents the 2005 centerpieces – three distinct designs by internationally renowned artist Ann P. Wåhlström. Ann first came to Pilchuck as a student in 1979, returning as a teaching assistant and a teacher. She studied ceramics and glassblowing at schools in Sweden and the United States. Since 1986 she has been designing glass for Kosta Boda of Sweden.
Providing the signature look for the Pilchuck Auction, these alluring centerpieces will be available for bidding on Auction evening. We are honored to have Ann in attendance this evening.
Ann Wåhlström explains why she wan

ted to design the centerpieces for the Pilchuck Auction, “I was invited to submit a proposal for Pilchuck Auction Centerpieces this year and thought it would be so much fun to do, since Pilchuck has played an important role both in my private and professional life! I came there as a student the first time in 1979, was overwhelmed by the great energy and amazing people, fell in love (still married!) and have returned many times over the years in different capacities.”
Ann continues, “When I heard that I was picked, it

made me even happier that the committee wanted me to do all three designs. They are based on the same technique and all play with hot applied colors that are allowed to move around during the blowing process to create a softened graphic pattern! We had a lot of fun making them and the two master blowers, Chuck Vanatta and Jay Macdonell, with the team of Poleturners were great. I am looking forward to seeing them all at the event!”
Once settled back at home in Sweden, Ann reflected on her experience working with these generous artists (dubbed Poleturners’ Union, Local 1201):
Stockholm June 2005
Coming back to Pilchuck last May as the 2005 Centerpiece designer was like being the Queen of Pilchuck for two weeks! It was such great energy and so much fun to all work together. The two super-skilled gaffers, Chuck and Jay, and the wonderful gang of Poleturners ( Canada, Seattle, Scandinavia spiced with Hawaii and Florida) became a totally tuned workforce after one day. With the direction of Chuck Lopez, who always was one step ahead, I really never had to worry about anything. I was totally happy with the pieces that came out of this joint effort and hope they will look smashing at the Pilchuck Auction in October !!!!!!!!
