Karen Buhler started
her career studying architecture and landscape horticulture
at Ohio State University and went on to take courses
in ceramics and glass. She completed a six year apprenticeship
under Robert Eickholt in 1984, during which she learned
the fundamentals of off-hand blowing; she then became
immersed in neon for twelve years. She studied at Pratt
Fine Arts Center and The Studio at the Corning Museum
of Glass and assisted at Pilchuck. She is currently
flameworking, making refined figural forms. The thin,
even walls and smooth sandblasted surface are testaments
to her technical proficiency and give her lightweight
yet sturdy glass figures a floating quality. She prefers
to express grace and humor in her works.
