| Pilchuck
to Receive 2003 NEA Award
On December 19, 2002, Pilchuck
Glass School learned it is one of only 69 Washington
state arts organizations and artists to receive grant
funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The
NEA announced an award of $25,000.00 in support of Pilchuck’s
2003 Artists-in-Residence Program.
“Pilchuck’s relationship with the NEA reaches
back to 1986,” says Executive Director Patricia
Watkinson. “That kind of longevity in funding
for the arts – and the continued commitment this
award represents – bespeaks the excellence of
Pilchuck’s artistic programming and the vital
role artists in residence play in the Pilchuck educational
experience.”
Each summer Pilchuck Glass School offers five consecutive
17-day residential sessions. Each session is comprised
of five concurrently running classes. Focused entirely
on creating art in glass, these classes are taught by
accomplished glass artists from all over the world.
In addition to the glass artists, Pilchuck hosts ten
artists in residence who work in media other than glass.
With the assistance of experienced glass artists, these
artists in residence have their ideas brought to life
in glass. Each also offers a slide show and lecture,
critiques students’ works, and brings new perspectives
to the artist-centered community.
Artists in residence for 2003 will be Xu Bing, Bella
Feldman, Livio Seguso, John Torreano, Judy Chicago,
Arlene Schechet, Nick Dine, Charles LeDray, John McQueen,
and Margo Mensing.
