Scanga to be Honored at Chateau Ste. Michelle Gala
On Friday, June 27 2003, Pilchuck Glass School and Chateau
Ste. Michelle Winery will join together to confer the
Libensky´ Award on the late Italo Scanga and celebrate
the release of the 2000 Artist Series Meritage featuring
Scanga’s artwork on the label. Friends of this
dynamic and insightful man, along with others who share
a love of fine wine and food, will gather for a lively
and memorable vintner’s dinner to benefit Pilchuck
Glass School. Although the night will be as intimate
and elegant as in years past, it will also capture Scanga’s
joie de vivre by featuring his favorite food and music.
The
honorary chair of this year’s event will be Dale
Chihuly who says, “Italo was my best friend and
one of the finest artists and teachers I have ever known.”
All former Libensky´ Award winners demonstrated
this love for Italo Scanga when they agreed unanimously
on his selection as this year’s Libensky´
Award recipient.
Born in the Calabria region of Italy in 1932, Scanga
immigrated to the United States with his family after
World War II, at the age of 14. A sculptor, painter,
and printmaker, Scanga made rich reference in his work
to the history of art, the Roman Catholicism of his
youth, folk art forms, and occasionally political events.
His work is in the collections of numerous museums including
the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern
Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
An artist associated with Pilchuck from its earliest
years, Scanga was a mentor, colleague, provocateur,
and inspiration to many, many artists he met here. He
first came to campus to teach in 1973 at Dale Chihuly’s
invitation. Over the years he participated in twenty-two
of Pilchuck’s thirty summers. In recent times,
he was most often an artist in residence. Broadly knowledgeable
in art history, music, and literature, he was a stimulating
influence upon students young and old.
Past recipients of the Libensky´ Award include
Dale Chihuly (1996), William Morris (1997), Lino Tagliapietra
(1998), Ginny Ruffner (1999), Dan Dailey (2000), Flora
Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick (2001), and Stanislav Libensky´
and Jaroslava Brychtová (2002).
