Hosts Exhibition Featuring Artworks Created During Pilchuck
Glass School Residencies
Saturday, June 7 through Friday, July 18, 2003, at Seattle’s
Center on Contemporary Art
Seattle’s
Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) will host
an exhibition of artworks created during Pilchuck Glass
School’s seminal residencies from Saturday, June
7 through Friday, July 18, 2003, at its Capitol Hill
gallery. Curated by renowned artists Katherine Gray
and Richard Marquis, the show features works from 24
emerging and established artists selected to participate
in Pilchuck Glass School’s recent Emerging Artists
in Residence and Hauberg Fellowship programs. This singular
show reflects the broad range and dynamic qualities
of contemporary glass at a Pacific Northwest gallery
renowned for supporting cutting-edge art.
The thirteen-year-old Emerging Artists in Residence
Program allows six artists who have either completed
school or are at a crossroads in their professional
development to live and work at Pilchuck’s campus
for six weeks in the fall. By contrast, the newer Hauberg
Fellowship selects six established professional artists
to campus for ten days during the spring. This residency
provides an opportunity for busy professionals to take
a brief respite from their busy lives to experiment
and collaborate on new work. The isolated -more- setting
along with the presence of other participants combine
to create the signature feature of both residencies:
An environment that nurtures focus on the creative challenges
at hand enhanced by opportunities for shared exploration
and innovation with artists of complementary skill and
vision.
Exhibition participants include Linda Beaumont, Brian
Boldon, Cassandria Blackmore, Rafael Cauduro, John de
Wit, Susan Taylor Glasgow, Judy Jensen, Fay Jones, Stuart
Keeler, Susie Krasnican, Thomas Lauerman, Robbie Miller,
Jason Mouer, Rie Oishi, Wonjoo Park, Timothy Ringsmuth,
Carmen Ruiz-Davila, Elizabeth Sandvig, Jeffrey Sarmiento,
Judith Schaechter, Therman Statom, Dragica Susanj, Dick
Weiss and Josh Werner. Works will range from monoprints
to blown and sculpted glass to mixed-media installations.
CoCA is located at 1420 – 11th Avenue in Seattle.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Thursday, from 2:00
to 8:00 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from noon to
5:00 p.m. Suggested admission price is $5.00. CoCA and
Pilchuck will host a special opening reception on Thursday,
June 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
