Formerly a glassblower
and neon tube bender, Karen Buhler began flameworking
glass six years ago. Her mastery of the medium is exemplified
by this wonderfully patriotic piece. With Gloria and
others in the Swimmer series, Buhler addresses the movements
of stroke, fashion, beauty, breath, and floating. Born
in Michigan in 1958, she earned a B.S. in landscape
horticulture from Ohio State University while blowing
glass, swimming, and scuba diving. Since moving to Seattle
in 1991, she has taught at the Pratt Fine Arts Center
and participated at Pilchuck as a teaching assistant.
Her work can be found in many beach houses around the
United States.
