Ordinary objects, camouflaged
by familiarity, blend into the background of everyday
existence. Casting disposable items in permanent materials
changes their context, allowing one to see them with
fresh eyes. Humor and irony are recurring themes in
Julie Alland’s work: this kiln-cast replica of
a mass-produced to-go coffee cup was created deliberately
using time-consuming, labor-intensive methods. Alland
studied with Karen LaMonte last summer at Pilchuck on
a Partner Scholarship from Public Glass. Her work is
included in numerous private collections and has been
exhibited across the United States and extensively in
the San Francisco Bay Area.
